A 403(b) plan is a retirement savings plan similar to a 401(k) and have many of the same benefits. The main difference is that they can only be offered through organizations exempt from federal income tax.


  • Public schools (teachers)
  • Nonprofit hospital and health care agencies
  • Religious organizations
  • Charities


  • Employees can make pretax salary deferrals up to $18,000 for 2016.
  • If you're 50 or older, you can add an additional $6,000 catch up contribution (or 100% of compensation, whichever is less)

Other considerations:

  • It is up to your employer or sometimes your contract whether your employer offers matching
  • If the plan allows for Roth contributions, employees may designation a portion or all of their salary deferrals as after-tax contributions
  • Depending on the plan, you may or may not be able to take a loan from a 403(b) account
